Dear friends,

We need your urgent help regarding an exiting and challenging international exercise on sustainable agriculture, called the "International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development" (IAASTD). We are looking for the best experts in this field to contribute as authors to the 13 chapters of the global assessment as well as five sub-regional assessments.

We are looking for a total of two coordinating lead authors per chapter for each chapter of the global and subglobal assessment reports. In addition to the coordinating lead authors, each chapter will have approximately 8-10 lead authors. The number of contributing authors is not set. The specific time requirement will be a function of how each team of chapter authors decides to work. Since the time requirement is great and the Global and Subglobal occur in parallel, it is virtually impossible for someone to be a lead author on two assessment reports.

The IAASTD is an intergovernmental exercise, sponsored by FAO, UNEP, UNDP, WHO, UNESCO and the World Bank will start off with a plenary meeting of member states, agencies and civil society from August 30 to September 3 in Nairobi. It is a two year process to produce an in depth and government approved assessment on the question "How can we reduce hunger and poverty, improve rural livelihoods, and facilitate equitable, environmentally, socially and economically sustainable development through the generation, access to, and use of agricultural knowledge, science and technology?" It is based upon a common document prepared by a Steering Committee of 40 representatives from governments, industry, farmers, consumers, NGOs, science and international institutions.
The IAASTD is supposed to take into account social, economic and cultural aspects but focus on agricultural technology and knowledge in the broadest sense. It entails 5 regional assessments as well as a global assessment.

The results of the Assessment, to be completed in 2007, are expected to have a major impact on the agricultural development policies of national governments as well as international institutions such as the FAO, the World Bank and GEF (including the CGIR centres), UNDP, UNEP, WHO. It may also serve as a reference for future international efforts of the private sector, of public-private partnerships and private foundations.

Please let us know about experts you believe should be on these teams and please do forward this message to colleagues around the world, who could contribute to this list. The official deadline for the nomination of authors for the global and CWANA assessment is June 10th 2005 and will be set for the other sub-regional assessments upon publication of their outline.

You can send nominations to NGO representatives for submission and also submit them directly to the IAASTD secretariat
